Nepali National Costume
Nepal is a very diverse country and different ethnic communities have their own costumes but Nepal has its national costume too. National costume of Nepal for male is Daura, Suruwal, Coat, and Topi; and for female is Gunyo Choli. Daura Suruwal is also known as labeda Suruwal. Daura is an upper wear, with 8 string attached which has religious significance too. T
hese 8 strings are called Astamatrika-Singini, and are Byagini, Kumari, Barahi, Brahmayani, Indrayani, Maheshwori, Byasnabi, and Mahalaxmi, all representing goddess of Hindu religion.
Daura Suruwal is official dress of Nepal. It became official in 1960 A.D. The Rana prime minister Jung Bahadur, during his visit to England was gifted a Coat by Queen. He then introduced C
oat in Nepali costume. Topi, a Nepali hat is another typical and unique hat which is also a pride of all Nepali. It is either a Dhaka topi or Bhadgaule Topi. Dhaka topi is colorful hat, and Bhadgaule is black hat.
Nepali women’s national costume is Gunyo Choli. Gunyo is also called Fariya. This is just a saree, a long piece of clothing that is wrapped around below the waist line. Top part of the dress is Choli, it is just like a blouse. It can be half or full sleeve. Also, in the waist line, womens wrap Patuka, a long clothing that is just 3-4 inches wide, wrapped around the waist as a belt.
